About John William Waterhouse

John William Waterhouse was an English painter, born in Rome in 1849, and died in London on 10 February 1917. He entered the Royal Academy Schools in London in 1870, first studying sculpture before turning to painting by 1874. He showed regularly at the Royal Academy, which made him an associate in 1885 and a full Academician in 1895.

Waterhouse loved stories from myth, legend and poetry. His interest in literary subjects links him to the Pre-Raphaelites, while his looser, sketchier brushwork shows he was also watching the Impressionists. His best-known painting, The Lady of Shalott (1888), shows Tennyson's heroine drifting downstream in a boat toward her death, and it hangs today at Tate Britain. He returned to Shakespeare's Ophelia three times, in 1889, 1894 and 1910, catching her at different moments of her story. For many people, John William Waterhouse is the painter who carried the romance of the Pre-Raphaelites into the twentieth century.

John William Waterhouse prints: reproductions of the Pre-Raphaelite paintings John William Waterhouse made between the 1870s and 1916. The collection includes The Magic Circle (1886), Circe Offering the Cup to Ulysses (1891), A Mermaid (1900), Gather Ye Rosebuds While Ye May (1908) and I Am Half-Sick of Shadows, Said the Lady of Shalott (1915).

This selection focuses on women from myth, poetry and Shakespeare: Circe, Lamia, Miranda, Juliet, Thisbe and the Lady of Shalott. Gardens and roses recur often, as in The Rose Bower, The Soul of the Rose and An Orange Garden. It also includes earlier Italian and classical scenes such as A Neapolitan Flax Spinner and Dolce Far Niente, plus a few portraits and studies.

The warm greens, reds and golds suit bedrooms, living rooms and reading corners, and the larger figure paintings work well above a bed or fireplace. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
