Kamisaka Sekka Prints

About Kamisaka Sekka

Kamisaka Sekka (1866–1942) was a Japanese painter and designer from Kyoto, born into a samurai family. He began studying painting as a teenager and came to see himself as an heir to Rinpa, the decorative school of Kōetsu, Sōtatsu and Kōrin known for bold shapes, gold grounds and stylised nature. The Japanese government later sent him to Glasgow, where he saw Art Nouveau first-hand. Back in Kyoto he taught at the Kyoto Municipal School of Arts and Crafts and designed textiles, ceramics, lacquerware and interiors.

Sekka is often called the last great Rinpa artist. His work mixes the flat colour and simplified forms of Rinpa with a modern design sense. He is best known for Momoyogusa (A World of Things), a set of 60 woodblock prints in three volumes published in Kyoto by Unsōdō in 1909–1910. Earlier books for the same publisher include Chigusa (A Thousand Grasses, 1899) and Chō senshu (A Thousand Butterflies, 1904).

Kamisaka Sekka prints: reproductions of Japanese woodblock prints by the Kyoto designer Kamisaka Sekka, most of them from his 1909 book Momoyogusa. The collection includes Cranes, Wisteria (1909), High Wave (1909), Mount Fuji (1909) and Small Waves (Sazanami).

This selection concentrates on nature reduced to flat shapes and bold colour: waves, pine trees, wisteria, chrysanthemums, maple, ivy, peonies, cranes and a white heron. Seasonal scenes such as hanami, frost and snow sit alongside a few figure prints, including dancers, an old man and a woman. Many designs read almost as patterns, with large areas of a single colour.

The graphic designs suit modern living rooms, dining rooms and offices, and the wave and plant prints work well as pairs or in a row above a sofa or console. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
