Katsushika Hokusai Prints

About Katsushika Hokusai

Katsushika Hokusai was a Japanese painter and printmaker, born in October 1760 in the Honjo district of Edo, today's Tokyo. As a teenager he was apprenticed to a woodblock engraver, and in 1778, at eighteen, he became a pupil of the ukiyo-e artist Katsukawa Shunshō. Ukiyo-e were the popular prints and paintings of Edo life. Over a long career he used around thirty different art names, and he kept working into old age, dying in Edo on 10 May 1849.

Hokusai made thousands of prints, paintings and illustrated books, including his much-loved sketchbooks known as Hokusai Manga. His landmark series, Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, was published from about 1826 to 1833 and shows the mountain from many viewpoints. Its most famous sheet, Under the Wave off Kanagawa, better known as The Great Wave (about 1830 to 1832), sets a tiny Mount Fuji inside the curl of a huge wave. From the late nineteenth century, Katsushika Hokusai's work deeply impressed Western artists.

Katsushika Hokusai prints: reproductions of the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints and ink paintings Katsushika Hokusai made between the 1780s and the 1840s. The collection includes Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji: Sekiya Village on the Sumida River (1830), Snow, Moon and Flowers: Yoshino (1833), Basket of Peonies (1810), Dragonfly and Bellflower (1820) and Wild Geese and Water (1839).

This selection goes beyond Hokusai's best-known landscapes. Alongside several sheets from Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, it includes scenes of working life such as dyers, weavers and metal carvers, women and children at home, sumo wrestlers, flower and insect studies, the Genroku poetry shell prints, and sheets from One Hundred Poems Explained by the Nurse and Eight Views of the Ryūkyū Islands.

The Fuji views and landscapes suit living rooms and hallways, and the smaller flower, shell and household scenes work well in kitchens, bedrooms and studies. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
