Kitagawa Utamaro Prints

About Kitagawa Utamaro

Kitagawa Utamaro was a Japanese print designer and painter, born around 1753 and probably raised in a provincial town before moving to Edo, today's Tokyo. As a child he was taught by the painter Toriyama Sekien, and early in his career he was taken up by the Edo publisher Tsutaya Jūzaburō. He worked in ukiyo-e, the popular woodblock prints of city life, theatre and fashion. He died in Edo on 31 October 1806.

Utamaro is best known for portraits of women. Around 1791 he began designing half-length and close-up portraits of single figures, the large-head pictures called ōkubi-e, rather than crowded group scenes. Series such as Ten Types of Women's Physiognomies (1792 to 1793) study faces, gestures and moods. He also made studies of nature, including a book of insects published in 1788. In 1804 he was punished with fifty days in manacles over prints of the warlord Toyotomi Hideyoshi. In 1891 the French writer Edmond de Goncourt published the first book on Kitagawa Utamaro.

Kitagawa Utamaro prints: reproductions of the Japanese ukiyo-e woodblock prints Kitagawa Utamaro designed in Edo in the late eighteenth and early nineteenth centuries. The collection includes Three Beauties of the Present Day (1793), Naniwaya Okita, from One Hundred Flower Arrangements, Woman with Fan and Parasol, from Ten Physiognomies of Women, Yamauba and Kintaro, and Diving for Abalones.

This selection concentrates on Utamaro's portraits of women, especially the named beauties of Edo teahouses and the Yoshiwara, shown reading, sewing, dressing and at leisure. It also includes sheets from his series Six Jewel Rivers and Eight Fashionable Views, several panels from multi-sheet triptychs, and a few parodies of classical stories.

The fine lines and muted colours suit bedrooms, dressing rooms, studies and hallways, and portraits from the same series hang well together. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
