About Lawrence Alma-Tadema

Sir Lawrence Alma-Tadema (1836–1912) was a Dutch-born British painter, born in Dronrijp in the Netherlands and died in Wiesbaden, Germany. He entered the Antwerp Academy in 1852 and later worked with the history painter Hendrik Leys in Antwerp. He moved permanently to London in 1870 and spent the rest of his career there. He was elected a member of the Royal Academy in 1879, was knighted in 1899 and received the Order of Merit in 1905.

Alma-Tadema is known for scenes of daily life in ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt, and for the precise painting of marble, bronze, silk and ancient architecture. Key works include Sappho and Alcaeus (1881), The Roses of Heliogabalus (1888) and The Finding of Moses (1904). Sappho and Alcaeus is held by the Walters Art Museum in Baltimore.

Lawrence Alma-Tadema prints: reproductions of the Victorian paintings of ancient Rome, Greece and Egypt by the Dutch-born British artist. The collection includes The Roses of Heliogabalus (1888), An Oleander (1882), The Meeting of Antony and Cleopatra: 41 BC (1883), A Reading from Homer (1885) and The Finding of Moses (1904).

Our selection focuses on marble terraces, baths, gardens and interiors, with Roman women, poets, collectors and emperors. It covers his early Merovingian and Egyptian subjects, such as Education of the Children of Clovis (1861) and The Egyptian Widow (1872), as well as later sea-view terraces like A Coign of Vantage (1895) and Ask Me No More (1906). White marble, blue Mediterranean water and flowers recur across the set.

The marble and garden scenes suit living rooms, dining rooms, bathrooms and studies. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
