Marianne von Werefkin Prints

About Marianne von Werefkin

Marianne von Werefkin was a Russian painter, born in Tula in 1860. She studied in Moscow and then privately with Ilya Repin, the leading Russian realist, and her early realist work earned her the nickname "the Russian Rembrandt." In 1896 she moved to Munich with the painter Alexej von Jawlensky, her partner for 27 years, where she ran an influential salon. She helped found the New Artists' Association of Munich in 1908 and later exhibited with The Blue Rider. Forced to leave Germany in 1914, she settled in Ascona, Switzerland, where she died in 1938.

From 1907 Werefkin painted in an expressionist way, using strong, unnatural colour and simplified shapes to carry mood rather than describe a scene. Her subjects include country roads, workers, dancers and mountain villages. Key works include The Dancer Alexander Sakharoff (1909), Washerwomen (1909), held by the Lenbachhaus in Munich, and Storm Winds (1915 to 1917). Many of her paintings are kept in Ascona by the foundation that bears her name.

Marianne von Werefkin prints: reproductions of expressionist paintings by the Russian painter Marianne von Werefkin, made in 1909 and 1910. The collection includes Washerwomen (1909), Self-Portrait I (1910) and Into the Night (1910).

This selection comes from Werefkin's Munich years, when she worked with The Blue Rider circle. All three paintings use strong, unnatural colour and simplified shapes. Washerwomen shows working women, Self-Portrait I shows the artist with red eyes and a fixed stare, and Into the Night is a dark, dreamlike night scene. The colour carries the mood more than the detail does.

The bold colour suits living rooms, studios and offices where a strong single piece is wanted; Into the Night works well in a hallway or reading room. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
