Mewar school Prints

About the Mewar School

Mewar painting is a school of Rajasthani miniature painting from the Hindu principality of Mewar in Rajasthan, and one of the leading Indian schools of the 17th and 18th centuries. Its earliest dated work is a ragamala series (pictures of musical modes) painted in 1605 at Chawand, an early capital of the state. The vigorous early style lasted, with variations, until about 1680, after which Mughal influence became more visible. Sahibdin was an outstanding painter of this early phase.

Mewar painting is known for simple, bright colour and direct emotional appeal. Krishna and the epics were favourite subjects, and the school stayed prolific through the 18th century and into the 19th, when portraits of the ruler and scenes from his life became more common alongside religious themes. Like other Rajasthani paintings, Mewar pages were kept in albums or boxes and passed from hand to hand.

Mewar school prints: reproductions of Rajasthani miniature paintings from the court of Mewar, made between about 1680 and 1761. The collection includes The Elephant of Maharana Jai Singh of Mewar Catches a Horse by the Tail (1680), Krishna's Earthly Ties (1695), Krishna Quells the Serpent Kaliya (1710), Prince Mathu Singh of Jatoli on a Blue Horse Riding to Udaipur (1720) and Equestrian Portrait of Maharana Raj Singh II of Mewar (1760).

This selection mixes devotional and court painting: Krishna subduing the serpent Kaliya and a Ramayana scene with Queen Kaikeyi, beside royal portraits, a ruler and his consort on a terrace, and royal elephants and horses.

The bright, flat colour suits living rooms, dining rooms and hallways, and the equestrian and elephant pictures work well in studies and offices. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
