About Odilon Redon

Odilon Redon was a French painter and printmaker, born on 20 April 1840 in Bordeaux. There he learned etching and lithography from the printmaker Rodolphe Bresdin, who became a lasting influence, and in 1864 he studied painting briefly under Jean-Léon Gérôme. He later learned lithography techniques from Henri Fantin-Latour, and the Symbolist poet Stéphane Mallarmé was a close friend. Redon died in Paris on 6 July 1916.

For many years Redon worked almost only in black: charcoal drawings and lithographs he called his noirs, full of haunting, fantastic and dreamlike images. His first lithograph album, In the Dream, appeared in 1879, followed by series honouring Edgar Allan Poe (1882) and Goya (1885). From the 1890s he turned to pastel and oil, and his flowers, butterflies and glowing heads are as bright as his early work is dark. Henri Matisse admired Odilon Redon's colour, and his visions are often linked to Symbolism, which valued dreams and inner feeling over realism.

Odilon Redon prints: reproductions of lithographs, charcoal drawings, pastels and paintings by the French Symbolist Odilon Redon, made between 1875 and 1916. The collection includes Dreams: Day (1891), The Haunted Mirror (1890), The Buddha (Seated beneath a Tree) (1904), Butterflies (1910) and Vase of Flowers (Yellow Background) (1916).

This selection covers both halves of Redon's career. The first is his black-and-white work: the lithographs of the 1891 Dreams series, floating heads, Christ figures and dark visions. The second is his later colour work in pastel and oil, with many vases of flowers, butterflies, mythological scenes such as Apollo's Chariot and Pandora, and figures surrounded by blossoms.

The flower pastels suit bedrooms, dining rooms and bright hallways, and the black-and-white lithographs work well in studies, libraries and grouped on a single wall. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
