About Paolo Veronese

Paolo Veronese (1528–1588) was an Italian painter born in Verona, the son of a stonecutter; his nickname simply means "from Verona". He trained with the local painter Antonio Badile, whose daughter he married in 1566, and in the 1550s he adopted the family name Caliari. In the early 1550s Veronese moved to Venice, where he stayed for the rest of his life, and he died there on 19 April 1588.

Veronese is known for vast, festive canvases crowded with richly dressed figures, marble architecture and silvery, light-filled colour. He decorated the church of San Sebastiano in Venice and painted frescoes at the Villa Barbaro at Maser around 1560. The Wedding at Cana (1563), painted for the monastery of San Giorgio Maggiore, is now in the Louvre. In 1573 a Last Supper filled with details the inquisitors found irreverent brought him before the Inquisition; he defended an artist's freedom and renamed it The Feast in the House of Levi. It hangs in the Gallerie dell'Accademia, Venice.

Paolo Veronese prints: reproductions of paintings by the Venetian Renaissance painter Paolo Veronese, made between about 1547 and 1581. The collection includes The Wedding at Cana (1562), Mars and Venus United by Love (1570), Boy with a Greyhound (1570), Rape of Europa (1581) and The Finding of Moses (1581).

This selection mixes his main subjects: crowded biblical and religious scenes such as The Madonna of the Cuccina Family, mythologies of Venus, Mars and Europa, and portraits including Daniele Barbaro and a lady as Saint Agnes. The pictures are full of silks, satins and marble, painted in light, silvery colour with pale blues, golds and pinks.

The light palettes suit living rooms, dining rooms and bedrooms; the wide Wedding at Cana works above a dining table or sideboard. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
