About Raphael

Raffaello Sanzio, known as Raphael, was an Italian painter and architect born in Urbino in 1483, and he died in Rome on April 6, 1520, at just 37. His father, Giovanni Santi, was court painter to the dukes of Urbino, and Raphael almost certainly began his training in his workshop. His earliest paintings show the strong influence of Perugino. From 1500 to 1508 he worked across central Italy, especially in Florence, where he became known for portraits and gentle Madonnas.

In 1508 Pope Julius II called Raphael to Rome to help redecorate the papal apartments in the Vatican, and he stayed for the rest of his life. There he painted The School of Athens (1509 to 1511), a gathering of ancient philosophers that became a model of balanced composition, as well as portraits such as Pope Julius II. In 1514 he was put in charge of building the new St Peter's Basilica. His work is admired for its clarity of form and ease of composition, and his Ansidei Madonna (1505) hangs in the National Gallery, London.

Raphael prints: reproductions of the paintings of Raphael, the Italian Renaissance painter, made between about 1503 and 1518. The collection includes The Three Graces (1503), Madonna in the Meadow (1505), Madonna del Cardellino (1505), Saint George and the Dragon (1506), The Sistine Madonna (1512) and Portrait of Baldassarre Castiglione (1514).

This selection centers on Raphael's Madonnas from his Florentine years, including the Madonna del Granduca, the Small Cowper Madonna and the Canigiani Holy Family. Portraits make up the second group, among them Woman with a Veil, Bindo Altoviti and Pope Leo X with two cardinals. The compositions are balanced and calm, with clear blues, reds and soft landscape backgrounds.

The calm compositions and clear colors suit bedrooms, nurseries, living rooms and studies, and the Madonnas work well above a bed or in a quiet hallway. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
