Painters painting, from Velázquez to Ensor

The Artist at Work art prints: paintings of artists painting, artists' studios and painters' self-portraits. The collection includes Johannes Vermeer's The Art of Painting (1666), Diego Velázquez's Las Meninas (1656), Judith Leyster's Self-Portrait (1630), James Ensor's Skeleton Painter in His Studio (1896), Édouard Manet's Claude Monet Painting in His Studio Boat (1874) and Paul Gauguin's Vincent van Gogh Painting Sunflowers (1888). It also includes John Singer Sargent's outdoor studies such as The Fountain, Villa Torlonia, Frascati (1907), Wassily Kandinsky's two paintings of Gabriele Münter at work in Kallmünz (1903), and self-portraits by Ingres, Van Gogh and Sorolla.

The selection runs from Jan Gossaert's St. Luke Painting the Madonna (1520) to the early 20th century, covering studios, easels, models and painting outdoors. Several are portraits of one artist made by another, such as Manet's Monet and Gauguin's Van Gogh.
