The Toilet

The mirror, the comb, the moment before the day

The Toilet (toilette): paintings and prints of women getting dressed, combing or arranging their hair, applying make-up or looking in a mirror.

Artists include Edgar Degas (La Coiffure; Mrs Jeantaud in the Mirror), Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec (Elles lithographs, Woman before a Mirror), Berthe Morisot (Girl Plaiting her Hair), Aubrey Beardsley (The Toilette of Salome), Dante Gabriel Rossetti (Lady Lilith), Uemura Shōen (Make-up) and Ito Shinsui (Before a Mirror, 1916). The collection also includes Mary Cassatt's The Fitting, a Pahari Indian miniature of the morning toilette and John William Waterhouse's A Mermaid.

The selection shows how French, British, Japanese and Indian artists each treated the same private moment of getting ready.

These intimate scenes suit bedrooms, dressing areas and bathrooms, and smaller prints fit beside a mirror or vanity. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
