About Thomas Cole

Thomas Cole was an English-born American painter, born in 1801 in Bolton-le-Moors, Lancashire. At 17 he emigrated with his family to the United States, where he worked as a wood engraver before turning to painting. In 1825 he moved to New York, made sketching trips into the Catskill Mountains, and became a founding member of the National Academy of Design. He later lived in the village of Catskill, travelled in Italy, and died in 1848.

Cole is remembered as the painter who inspired the Hudson River School, the first generation of American artists to treat their own wilderness as a serious subject. His View from Mount Holyoke, Northampton, Massachusetts, after a Thunderstorm, better known as The Oxbow (1836), sets a wild storm against tidy farmland and hangs at the Metropolitan Museum of Art. He also painted grand moral series, including the five-part The Course of Empire (1833 to 1836), now at the New-York Historical Society, and The Voyage of Life (1840).

Thomas Cole prints: reproductions of paintings by Thomas Cole, the founder of the Hudson River School of American landscape painting. The collection includes Distant View of Niagara Falls (1830), The Titan's Goblet (1833) and Landscape.

This selection pairs Cole's American wilderness views with his imaginative side. Distant View of Niagara Falls shows the falls seen from a distance across wooded ground. The Titan's Goblet is a fantasy: a vast stone cup standing in a landscape, with a lake and small buildings on its rim. Landscape is a quieter view. All three use the warm light and deep space typical of the Hudson River School.

The wide landscapes suit living rooms, offices and spaces above a sofa or fireplace, and The Titan's Goblet works well in a study or library. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
