About Thomas Moran

Thomas Moran (1837–1926) was an American landscape painter and printmaker, born in Bolton, England. His family emigrated to the United States when he was seven and settled in the Philadelphia area, where as a teenager he was apprenticed to a wood engraver. He worked as an illustrator, was strongly influenced by the British painter J. M. W. Turner, and is associated with the Hudson River School of American landscape painting.

In 1871 Thomas Moran joined Ferdinand V. Hayden's geological survey of Yellowstone as a guest artist, working alongside the photographer William Henry Jackson. Their images helped persuade Congress to make Yellowstone the first national park the following year, and the trip became the turning point of his career. Along with Albert Bierstadt, he was among the first artists to paint the Rocky Mountains and the Grand Canyon. His best-known paintings include The Grand Canyon of the Yellowstone and The Chasm of the Colorado. He died in Santa Barbara, California.

Thomas Moran prints: reproductions of landscape paintings and etchings by Thomas Moran, the American painter of Yellowstone and the West. Works here include Tower at Tower Falls, Yellowstone (1872), Mountain of the Holy Cross (1890), Green River Cliffs, Wyoming (1881), The Juniata, Evening (1864) and The Much Resounding Sea (1884).

This selection covers the range of Moran's career: Yellowstone and Wyoming views from the 1870s and 1880s, eastern scenes such as Long Island and Fort George Island in Florida, Venice and the sea, and his etchings, including Bridge in the Pass of Glencoe (1882). It also includes Smelting Works at Denver (1892), an unusual industrial subject.

The large western views work above a sofa, bed or fireplace and in offices, while the smaller etchings suit studies, libraries and hallways. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
