A woman lies stretched diagonally across a green velvet sofa piled with cushions, one arm trailing toward the floor, an open book held in her raised hand near the pillow. Her flowing black gown and cloak spill over the seat and onto the floor, and her red hair is loosely pinned above a face turned in profile, eyes closed. High-buttoned black boots show beneath the hem. The loose, tonal brushwork and muted green-and-black palette suggest late-night fatigue after a ball.
Ramon Casas (1866–1932) was a Catalan painter, draughtsman and graphic designer. He trained in the studio of Joan Vicens in Barcelona and then in Paris at the Académie Carolus-Duran and Académie Gervex, becoming a central figure of Catalan modernisme. His portraits and crowd scenes recorded the intellectual and social elite of Barcelona and Paris, and his posters and drawings for the magazine and café Els Quatre Gats helped define the movement's graphic style. His work is held by the Museu Nacional d'Art de Catalunya and the Cercle del Liceu in Barcelona.

John Singer Sargent (1856–1925) was the most sought-after portrait painter of the Gilded Age — celebrated on both sides of the Atlantic for his virtuoso brushwork and uncanny ability to capture the psychology of his sitters. His dazzling technical facility earned comparisons to Velázquez, while works like Madame X and Carnation, Lily, Lily, Rose secured his place as one of the great Impressionist painters in English-speaking culture.
