Witches and Sorcerers

Witches and sorcerers in art: paintings, engravings, woodblock prints and illustrations of witches, wizards, sorceresses and magic. Artists include Arthur Rackham, Pieter Bruegel the Elder, John William Waterhouse, Aubrey Beardsley, Edmund Dulac, Ivan Bilibin, Gustave Doré, Albrecht Dürer, Utagawa Kuniyoshi and Tsukioka Yoshitoshi. The works range from Dürer's Witch Riding on a Goat (about 1500) and Bruegel's engravings of the 1550s and 1560s to Japanese ukiyo-e and fairy tale illustration of the early 20th century. Typical subjects are Circe and Medea, Baba Yaga, Morgan le Fay, alchemists, magic circles, fairy godmothers and summoned spirits.

The selection covers magic as folklore, myth and fairy tale, from Renaissance engravings of witches to illustrated children's stories.

The engravings and illustrations suit studies, libraries and hallways, and the fairy tale works fit an older child's room. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
