Josef Albers (1888–1976) was a Bauhaus master and the father of systematic colour theory in modern art — the painter whose Homage to the Square series (1950–1976), comprising hundreds of nested squares in subtly varied colour combinations, constitutes one of the most sustained meditations on perception in the history of art. His work demonstrated that colour has no fixed identity — that every colour is altered by its neighbours — and in doing so transformed how artists, designers, and teachers think about visual experience.
