Eduard Charlemont (1848–1906) was an Austrian painter whose The Moorish Chief (1878) became one of the most celebrated Orientalist portraits of the 19th century — a work of such commanding presence and technical authority that it was acquired by the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, where it has hung ever since. Working in Vienna, he combined the Viennese academic tradition with the Orientalist fascination with North Africa, producing portraits of exceptional dignity and painterly refinement.
