A white-robed woman kneels before a coiled garden apparition

In a golden garden, a small white-robed woman with light hair kneels before a spiral apparition of grey-green coils holding a pale-eyed face with long dark hair, white eyes and a red mouth, ringed by an orange-red feathered collar and trailing pink tendrils. Tall pink fringed blooms rise on long stems at the centre before slender tree trunks, a pale radiant disc and a soft rainbow arcing across the yellow sky.

Georges de Feure (1868–1943), born Georges Joseph van Sluijters in Paris to a Dutch father, was a painter, lithographer and designer of Symbolism and Art Nouveau. He left the Amsterdam Rijksakademie for Paris in 1889, designed posters for the Salon des Cent and Loïe Fuller, and became one of Siegfried Bing's leading designers, exhibiting in Bing's pavilion at the 1900 Exposition Universelle. His posters of graceful young women in browns, greens and pinks appeared in Les Maîtres de l'Affiche. His work is held by the Musée d'Orsay, the Van Gogh Museum and the Metropolitan Museum of Art.
