Ivan Bilibin (1876–1942) was the foremost illustrator of Russian folklore and fairy tales, whose richly ornamental style drew on Byzantine iconography, traditional Russian folk art, and Art Nouveau. His illustrations for the fairy tales of Pushkin defined the visual language of Russian fantasy art and remain among the most distinctive images in the history of book illustration.
