About Ivan Bilibin

Ivan Bilibin was a Russian illustrator and stage designer, born on 16 August 1876 in Tarkhovka, near Saint Petersburg. He studied law at Saint Petersburg University and trained as an artist in Munich under Anton Ažbe and then under Ilya Repin. He was an active member of the World of Art, a circle of Russian artists devoted to books, theatre and design. After the 1917 revolution he lived in Egypt, then in Paris from 1925, before returning to Leningrad in 1936. He died there on 7 February 1942, during the siege of the city.

Bilibin is remembered for his pictures of Russian fairy tales and folk legends. His style is easy to spot: firm black outlines, flat areas of colour and decorated borders drawn from folk embroidery and old Russian ornament. His early books included Vasilisa the Beautiful (1899) and Sister Alyonushka and Brother Ivanushka (1901 to 1902), and he later illustrated Pushkin's Tale of Tsar Saltan. Ivan Bilibin's images still shape how many people picture Russian folklore.

Ivan Bilibin prints: reproductions of the Russian fairy-tale illustrations, book covers and posters Ivan Bilibin made between 1902 and 1930. The collection includes Baba Yaga (1902), Vasilisa the Beautiful and the Skull Lantern (1902), The Tale of Tsar Saltan, Cover (1905), The Thirty-Three Bogatyrs (1905) and Aladdin (1930).

This selection concentrates on two book projects: Vasilisa the Beautiful (1902), with its White, Red and Black Horsemen, and Pushkin's Tale of Tsar Saltan (1905), with its sea voyages, the swan and Prince Guidon. It also includes publisher's and exhibition posters from 1903 and 1904 and later work, including A Thousand and One Nights and drawings made after he left Russia.

The bold outlines and decorated borders suit children's rooms, libraries, reading corners and hallways, and pages from one story hang well as a series. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
