A lone walker under the full moon at the water's edge

A full spring moon hangs over Sagami Bay, and the sea answers it — a path of broken silver laid across the water, a wind-bent pine leaning into the night, two small figures on the shore at Ninomiya. Made around 1932, this is one of Hasui's most loved nocturnes, and the blues are the reason: layer upon layer of them, from the pale horizon to the deep indigo of the pine, printed so the night itself seems to hold light.

Kawase Hasui (1883–1957) was the master of shin-hanga, the movement that took ukiyo-e's centuries of woodblock craft and turned them toward mood, weather, and light.

This print is hand-printed on Hahnemühle German Etching paper using a 12-ink archival giclée process. Museum studios use this same paper stock.
