After Mark Rothko Prints

About Mark Rothko

Mark Rothko was an American painter, born Marcus Rothkowitz on 25 September 1903 in Dvinsk, then part of the Russian Empire and now Daugavpils in Latvia. At ten he moved with his family to Portland, Oregon. He studied at Yale from 1921 to 1923, then settled in New York, where he studied briefly at the Art Students League and was otherwise largely self-taught. He died in his New York studio on 25 February 1970.

Rothko moved from city scenes through myth-inspired, Surrealist pictures to pure abstraction by the late 1940s. Around 1950 he arrived at the format he is known for: large, soft-edged rectangles of colour that seem to float and glow on the canvas. His work belongs to Abstract Expressionism, the New York movement of the 1940s and 1950s. His fourteen dark canvases for the Rothko Chapel in Houston were made in the 1960s. The prints in this collection are designs inspired by Mark Rothko's work, not reproductions of his paintings.

After Mark Rothko prints: original colour-field designs made in the style of Mark Rothko's paintings. These are new designs inspired by his work, not reproductions of his paintings. The collection includes Blue, Yellow and Red, Black and Purple, Orange and Purple, Green, Yellow and Red, and White, Yellow and Dark Grey.

Each design stacks two or three soft-edged blocks of colour on a plain ground, following the format Rothko used from around 1950. The selection runs from bright combinations of orange, yellow and red to darker pairings of black, purple and brown, so a piece can be chosen to match a room's palette.

The large colour blocks suit living rooms, bedrooms and home offices, and they work well above a sofa, bed or sideboard. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
