Mark Rothko (1903–1970) was a central figure of Abstract Expressionism and one of the most emotionally powerful painters of the 20th century. His signature colour field compositions — luminous, hovering rectangles of colour — were intended to produce in the viewer the same overwhelming emotional experience as religious art.
