August Strindberg Prints

About August Strindberg

August Strindberg was a Swedish writer and artist, born in Stockholm in 1849 and died there in 1912. He is best known as one of the founders of modern drama: his novel The Red Room (1879) made his name, and his plays The Father (1887), Miss Julie (1888) and A Dream Play (1902) are still staged around the world.

Alongside his writing, August Strindberg painted, mostly in short, intense bursts during troubled periods of his life. His best-known paintings are stormy, expressive seascapes and coastlines, such as The Wonderland (1894). In the mid-1890s, during the personal crisis he later described in his book Inferno, he also studied alchemy and experimented with camera-less photographs he called "celestographs".

August Strindberg prints: reproductions of the Expressionist paintings Swedish writer and painter August Strindberg made between 1892 and 1905. Works in the collection include Wonderland (Underlandet), Stormy Sea, Broom Buoy (1892), Little Water, Dalarö (1892), Seascape (1894) and The Garden of Rosendal II (1903).

This selection concentrates on Strindberg's sea and coast paintings: stormy water, buoys, sunsets and shorelines from the Stockholm archipelago, painted thickly with a palette knife in greys, greens, whites and browns. It also includes later landscapes, a garden, a town view and The White Mare, which share the same rough surface and dark, changeable skies.

The moody seascapes suit studies, libraries, bedrooms and coastal homes, and a pair works well over a desk or console table. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
