August Strindberg (1849–1912) was a Swedish playwright, novelist, and polymath who was also, in the intervals between writing, a serious and original visual artist. His paintings — stormy seascapes, moody forests, dark urban landscapes — were produced during periods of psychological crisis and have the raw, unpolished energy of a non-academic artist working directly from inner necessity. Now held in the Nationalmuseum in Stockholm, his paintings are increasingly recognised as precursors of Expressionism and as the authentic visual output of one of the 19th century's most turbulent creative minds.
