Clouds and Mountains — The Majestic Landscapes of Hiroshi Yoshida

Hiroshi Yoshida climbed before he printed. He was a mountaineer — a member of the Japanese Alpine Club — and it shows in these views in a way it never quite does in work made from photographs. He knew what the light does at altitude in the hour before the cloud comes down.

Eleven peaks, cut and printed in the shin-hanga method: Yosemite and Rainier, Moraine Lake and the Matterhorn, Fuji from two directions, and the Japanese mountains he knew on foot. Yoshida pulled his blocks through impression after impression, one colour at a time, until the air itself has weight.

Archival 12-ink giclée on Hahnemühle German Etching paper, hand-framed in solid wood. From $150 CAD.
