About Émile Bernard

Émile Bernard was a French painter and writer, born in 1868 and died in Paris in 1941. He trained in Paris in the studio of the painter Fernand Cormon. In 1886 he went to Pont-Aven in Brittany, where he met Paul Gauguin and became part of the circle known as the Pont-Aven School.

Émile Bernard is known for helping develop cloisonnism, a style of flat areas of bright colour held inside bold dark outlines, like stained glass or enamel, which in turn influenced Gauguin. He was a close friend and correspondent of Vincent van Gogh, and his letters with Van Gogh, Gauguin, Redon and Cézanne, which he later published, are an important record of the period. He travelled to Italy in 1894 and lived in Egypt for about ten years before returning to France in 1904. His Self-Portrait (1897) is in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam.

Émile Bernard prints: reproductions of the Post-Impressionist paintings French painter Émile Bernard made in Brittany and Paris from the late 1880s. Works in the collection include The Blue Coffee Pot (1888), The Nymphs (1889), Woman Walking on the Banks of the Aven (1890) and Des Roses.

This selection concentrates on Bernard's Pont-Aven years, when he painted in flat areas of colour with firm outlines. It includes two still lifes, The Blue Coffee Pot and Des Roses, a Breton river landscape with a walking woman, and a group of nymphs in a landscape.

The still lifes suit kitchens and dining rooms; the landscape and figure paintings suit living rooms, bedrooms and hallways. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
