Empty Streets

Streets, squares and canals with nobody in them

Empty streets in art: paintings and Japanese woodblock prints of town and village streets, lanes, bridges and squares with few or no people in them. The most represented artist is Kawase Hasui, with shin hanga prints from 1920 to 1956 of Japanese towns, temples and harbours in rain, snow and moonlight, followed by John Singer Sargent's Venice, Capri and Spain, Karl Wiener's 1920s suburbs and pavements, Gustave Caillebotte and Edward Hopper, whose Nighthawks (1942) is included. Typical subjects are streets at night, early-morning towns, lanes after rain and village streets in snow.

The selection focuses on streets at quiet hours, so architecture, weather and light carry each scene rather than people.

The calm street scenes suit hallways, studies and bedrooms, and the small Hasui prints group well in a row. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
