A near-empty crossing seen from high above

A steep downward view onto a road junction, the frame given over almost entirely to bare carriageway in a warm grey. Bands of setted paving cross the upper part and run along the lower right, and kerbs curve around a traffic island. Two figures in dark coats cross at the top right, one with an arm raised, their shadows stretching behind them. Below, a cyclist in a pale coat rides away with a large pale container on the back of the machine, throwing a long shadow across the empty road. A lamp standard rises near the bottom edge.

László Moholy-Nagy (1895–1946) was a Hungarian painter, photographer and designer and one of the defining teachers of the Bauhaus, where he led the preliminary course and the metal workshop from 1923 to 1928. He worked in paint, photography, typography and light, pioneering the cameraless photogram and setting out his ideas in Malerei, Fotografie, Film (1925). Driven out of Germany, he worked in Amsterdam and London before settling in Chicago, where he founded the New Bauhaus in 1937. His work is held by the Museum of Modern Art, the Guggenheim, the Art Institute of Chicago and Tate.
