About Franz Marc

Franz Marc (1880–1916) was a German painter born in Munich. He studied at the Munich Academy of Fine Arts from 1900, and trips to Paris introduced him to French Impressionism and to Vincent van Gogh. In 1911 he and Wassily Kandinsky left a Munich artists' group to found Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider), which published an influential almanac in 1912. Marc joined the German army at the outbreak of the First World War and was killed near Verdun in 1916, aged 36.

Marc painted animals above all, especially horses, cows and cats, painted in bold, unnatural colours. He used colour for feeling rather than description, giving blue, yellow and red their own emotional meanings. Key works include The Large Blue Horses (1911), in the Walker Art Center, Minneapolis, The Yellow Cow (1911), in the Guggenheim Museum, New York, and Fate of the Animals (1913), in the Kunstmuseum Basel.

Franz Marc prints: reproductions of Expressionist paintings and woodcuts by the German painter Franz Marc, made between 1910 and 1914. The collection includes Grazing Horses I (1910), Blue Horse I (1911), Cows, Red, Green, Yellow (1911), The Tiger (1912) and The Foxes (1913).

This selection is almost entirely animals: horses, deer in snow and forest, cows, foxes, a tiger, a monkey and a cat. Most works use the bold, non-natural colours of his Der Blaue Reiter years, with blue horses, red and yellow ground and green shadows. The later pictures, such as The Foxes and Deer in the Forest II, break the forms into angled planes.

The strong colour suits living rooms, offices and children's rooms, and the larger horse and deer paintings work above a sofa or sideboard. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
