Franz Marc (1880–1916) was a co-founder of Der Blaue Reiter (The Blue Rider) and one of the most significant German Expressionists. His bold, primary-coloured paintings of animals — horses, deer, foxes, cows — sought to represent the spiritual purity he believed animals possessed. Killed at Verdun at 36, he left a body of work of extraordinary chromatic power.
