Franz Xaver Kosler Prints

About Franz Xaver Kosler

Franz Xaver Kosler was an Austrian painter, born in Vienna in 1864 and died in Syracuse, Sicily, in December 1905, aged just 41. He trained in Vienna, first under Christian Griepenkerl and then at the Academy of Fine Arts under Leopold Carl Müller, a painter well known for his scenes of Egypt. From 1886 Kosler made study trips to the Balkans.

Kosler first travelled to Cairo in 1892 and afterwards returned to Egypt almost every winter, which made him one of the Orientalists, European artists who painted North Africa and the Middle East. Franz Xaver Kosler is best known for close, carefully observed portraits of ordinary people he met there: young Bedouin, Nubian girls, men and women in headscarves, painted with quiet attention to faces and fabrics. He also painted notable sitters, among them Prince Said Halim Pasha, and showed his work in Cairo and Vienna. Most of his paintings are today in private collections.

Franz Xaver Kosler prints: reproductions of the Orientalist portraits Austrian painter Franz Xaver Kosler made in Egypt between 1893 and 1903. Works in the collection include Young Egyptian Woman (1893), African Beauty in White (1894), Young Bedouin Woman (1895), A Bedouin Man (1895) and Young Man in a White Cap (1903).

This selection is made up entirely of Kosler's head-and-shoulders portraits of young men and women he painted in Egypt. Each sitter is shown close up against a plain background, wearing a turban, headscarf, veil or cap. The paintings give careful attention to faces and the folds and colours of fabric, in a calm, quiet manner.

The quiet portraits suit studies, libraries, hallways and bedrooms, and two or three side by side work well on a single wall. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
