Franz Xaver Kosler (1864–1905) was an Austrian Orientalist painter who studied in Vienna and Munich before making extended journeys to North Africa and the Middle East. His portraits of Bedouin men, Egyptian women, and African subjects combine technical refinement with unusual dignity and psychological presence — works that treat their subjects as individuals rather than types, giving them a warmth and particularity that distinguishes Kosler from many of his contemporaries in the genre.
