About Jamini Roy
Jamini Roy was an Indian painter, born on 11 April 1887 in the village of Beliatore, in the Bankura district of Bengal. At sixteen he joined the Government School of Art in Calcutta, where he learned European academic realism and was taught by Abanindranath Tagore, leader of the Bengal School. For years he earned his living painting commissioned oil portraits and landscapes. He lived and worked in Calcutta, now Kolkata, until his death there on 24 April 1972.
In the early 1920s Jamini Roy gave up that Western style and turned to the folk art of rural Bengal, including the Kalighat paintings and the scroll paintings of the village patuas. His mature pictures use simple shapes, bold outlines and flat colour in natural pigments from earth and minerals. He considered his seventeen-panel Ramayana (1946) his finest achievement. He received the Padma Bhushan in 1954, and in 1976 his works were declared national art treasures of India.
Jamini Roy prints: reproductions of paintings by the Bengali modernist Jamini Roy, mostly from his mature folk-inspired period after the early 1920s. The collection includes Woman in Pink Sari (1922), Black Horse (Kalo Ghora), Fawn (Horinchhana), Cat and Shrimp and Christ (Jishu).
This selection concentrates on Roy's flat, bold-outlined figures drawn from Bengali village art: women in saris, dancing gopinis, animals and religious subjects. It also includes his portrait of Rabindranath Tagore and a paired set of Black Horse and Fawn. The colours are earthy reds, ochres, black and pink on plain grounds.
