Jamini Roy (1887–1972) was a Bengali painter who renounced Western academic training to develop a style rooted in the folk-art traditions of rural Bengal — particularly the flat, bold outlines and pure colours of Kalighat pat painting. Reducing the figure to its essential graphic elements, he created a body of work of extraordinary formal clarity and emotional directness — women, gopinis, cats, Christ figures — that bridges the Indian folk tradition and 20th-century modernist abstraction. Roy is now considered one of the most important Indian artists of the 20th century and a pioneer of the post-colonial recovery of indigenous visual forms.
