About Joichi Hoshi
Joichi Hoshi was a Japanese printmaker, born in 1913 in Niigata Prefecture and died in 1979 in Chiba Prefecture. He trained as a teacher and taught at an elementary school in Taiwan, then returned to Japan after the Second World War and later studied at the Musashino Art School in Tokyo. He began with stencil printing before turning to woodblock prints.
Joichi Hoshi is best known for quiet, deeply coloured woodblock prints of the night sky and of trees: constellations such as the Great Dipper and the Southern Cross, star festivals, and bare branches spreading like veins against the dark. Works such as The Southern Cross (1967) and The Great Dipper (1969) are held by the Minneapolis Institute of Art. He won prizes from the Japan Print Association and the Kokuga Association, and showed several times at the Tokyo International Print Biennale from 1960.
