Joichi Hoshi (1913–1979) was a Japanese Sōsaku-hanga printmaker known for his strikingly simple, almost abstract studies of trees — compositions reduced to pure shape, colour, and silhouette. Working in woodblock, he achieved a meditative stillness that bridges Japanese printmaking tradition and mid-century abstract sensibility. His tree prints, with their seasonal palette and quiet authority, are among the most distinctive works of postwar Japanese printmaking.
