Leo Gestel was a Dutch painter, born in Woerden in 1881, and he died in Hilversum in 1941. He was first taught by his father, Willem Gestel, an artist and art school director, and he also studied with August Allebé. He had a studio in Amsterdam and travelled to Italy, Spain, Belgium and Germany for inspiration.
Leo Gestel is counted among the Bergen School, a group of Dutch painters who worked in and around the village of Bergen in North Holland in the early twentieth century and moved Dutch painting toward modern, expressive forms. His subjects were mainly still lifes, portraits and landscapes. The Frans Hals Museum in Haarlem holds his work.
Leo Gestel prints: reproductions of drawings and works on paper by the Dutch Expressionist painter Leo Gestel. Works include Three Black Horses, Woman's Head and Figure Sketch.
This small selection focuses on Gestel's drawing: a group of horses in motion, a head study and a figure sketch. They show the simplified, rhythmic lines of his Expressionist period.
The sketch-like works suit studies, bedrooms and hallways, and they look good together in matching frames. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
