Leo Gestel (1881–1941) was a Dutch painter and graphic artist who moved through Post-Impressionism, Cubism, and Expressionism to develop a personal modernist style of bold graphic energy. A leading figure in Dutch early modernism, he produced paintings, woodcuts, lithographs, and drawings of horses, figures, and landscapes with an assertive line and a vigorous handling of mass that places him in the tradition of the great Dutch draughtsmen. His figure sketches and animal studies have an immediacy and confidence that reward close attention.
