Rudolf Ernst (1854–1932) was an Austrian Orientalist painter who spent much of his career in Paris and made extensive journeys to Spain, Morocco, Egypt, and Turkey. His interiors — musicians in tiled courtyards, scholars in mashrabiya-screened rooms, guards in sumptuous palace corridors — are among the most sumptuously detailed works of the entire Orientalist movement. Working in the tradition of Ludwig Deutsch, he brought an exceptional gift for pattern, colour, and the warm glow of interior light to every composition.

A standing woman in a gold-patterned kaftan and teal headscarf holds a long-necked saz, one arm raised along its neck, while a seated woman in a striped teal-and-gold robe looks up at her, resting a hand on a tambourine. They are set on a patterned rug over a herringbone wood floor, before a carved wooden lattice screen and a wall of blue floral tiles; a pair of red slippers and a pair of yellow slippers lie discarded on the rug.
Osman Hamdi Bey (1842–1910) was an Ottoman painter and archaeologist. He abandoned law studies in Constantinople and Paris to train under the Orientalist painters Jean-Léon Gérôme and Gustave Boulanger, and later founded and directed the Istanbul Archaeology Museums. His paintings depict Ottoman subjects, among them scholars, women and religious scenes such as Reading the Quran, with a directness and intellectual seriousness unusual in the Orientalist painting of his French teachers. His work is held by the Pera Museum in Istanbul, the Musée d'Orsay and the Alte Nationalgalerie in Berlin.
