About Piet Mondrian
Piet Mondrian was a Dutch painter, born on 7 March 1872 in Amersfoort, in the Netherlands. He first qualified as a drawing teacher, then studied at the Rijksakademie in Amsterdam and painted landscapes. In 1912 he moved to Paris, where Cubism pushed him towards abstraction. With Theo van Doesburg he co-founded De Stijl, Dutch for "The Style", a movement and magazine devoted to pure, abstract art. He left Paris for London in 1938 and moved to New York in 1940, where he died on 1 February 1944.
Mondrian's mature paintings, which he called Neoplasticism, use only straight black lines, right angles, the primary colours red, yellow and blue, and white and grey. In New York he loosened his rules: Broadway Boogie Woogie (1942 to 1943), now at the Museum of Modern Art, breaks the lines into bright, pulsing blocks inspired by the city and its music. Piet Mondrian left Victory Boogie Woogie unfinished at his death.

It begins with Dutch windmills, dunes, churches and flowers painted between 1903 and 1911, moves through tree studies and the Cubist-influenced compositions of 1913 to 1918, and ends with the black-grid primary-colour paintings of the 1920s and 1930s and the New York pictures of 1942 and 1943.
