About Rudolf Ernst

Rudolf Ernst (1854–1932) was an Austrian-born painter, born in Vienna and died in Fontenay-aux-Roses, near Paris. His father, Leopold Ernst, was an architect and painter. Rudolf trained at the Academy of Fine Arts in Vienna, studied in Rome, and in 1876 settled in Paris, where he exhibited as Rodolphe Ernst and spent the rest of his career.

Rudolf Ernst began with portraits and genre scenes, but by 1885 he had turned almost entirely to Orientalism, the European fashion for painting scenes of North Africa and the Middle East. Travels to Spain, Morocco and Istanbul fed his imagination, as did photographs and prints. He painted mosque interiors, palace guards, scholars and harem scenes in a polished, richly detailed style, more concerned with atmosphere than accuracy. He also learned to decorate ceramic tiles and, from 1905, ran a tile workshop at his home in Fontenay-aux-Roses, which he decorated in Ottoman style. His work was shown at the Paris world's fairs of 1889 and 1900.

Rudolf Ernst prints: reproductions of the Orientalist paintings Austrian-born artist Rudolf Ernst made in Paris in the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The collection includes Charity among Dervishes at Scutari (1893), The Musician (1895), The Palace Guard (with tiger), In the Madrasa and The Perfume Makers.

This selection focuses on interiors and doorways: scholars reading, craftsmen at work, merchants, musicians, palace guards and men at prayer, set among patterned tiles, carved wood and carpets. The paintings are highly detailed, with warm browns, golds and turquoise, and most show one or two figures in a calm, everyday moment.

The warm, detailed palettes suit living rooms, dining rooms, libraries and studies, and they work well in rooms with wood furniture, rugs or patterned textiles. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
