Sacred Spaces
Temples, shrines, mosques and cathedrals
Sacred spaces in art: paintings and prints of churches, cathedrals, temples, shrines, mosques and pagodas.
Works include Claude Monet's Rouen Cathedral series (1890s), John Constable's Salisbury Cathedral, Henri Matisse's Notre-Dame, John Singer Sargent's Santa Maria della Salute, Childe Hassam's Church at Old Lyme, Frederic Edwin Church's The Parthenon and Jean-Léon Gérôme's Young Greeks in the Mosque. Japanese woodblock prints by Utagawa Hiroshige, Kawase Hasui, Hiroshi Yoshida, Takahashi Shotei and Ohara Koson show shrines, gates and pagodas. The collection also has Henri Martin's church at Labastide-du-Vert and a Chinese ink painting by Shen Zhou.
The selection treats places of worship as architecture in a landscape, setting European cathedrals beside Japanese shrines and Chinese temples.
The architectural subjects suit studies, hallways and reading rooms; the Monet cathedrals work well hung as a pair or row. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
