About Sandro Botticelli

Sandro Botticelli, born Alessandro di Mariano Filipepi, was an Italian painter of the Renaissance, born in Florence around 1445 and died there in 1510. His nickname, meaning "little barrel", came from his elder brother. He trained under the painter Fra Filippo Lippi, from whom he learned clear outlines and graceful, slightly melancholy figures, and he worked for wealthy Florentine families linked to the Medici.

Sandro Botticelli is best known for Primavera and The Birth of Venus, both painted in the 1480s and now in the Uffizi Gallery in Florence. These large paintings of figures from classical myth, with their flowing lines and pale, delicate colour, have come to stand for the Renaissance itself. In 1481–82 he was called to Rome to paint frescoes on the walls of the Sistine Chapel, and he also made drawings for Dante's Divine Comedy. His reputation faded after his death until the Pre-Raphaelites and other artists rediscovered him in the late 19th century.

Sandro Botticelli prints: reproductions of the Italian Renaissance paintings Sandro Botticelli made in Florence between about 1470 and 1489. Works in the collection include The Birth of Venus (1485), Spring (Primavera, 1480), Pallas and the Centaur (1480), Giuliano de’ Medici (1478) and Annunciation (1489).

This selection covers Botticelli's three main subjects. It has his large mythological paintings, including The Birth of Venus, offered in full and as a detail; religious works such as the Annunciation, several Madonna and Child paintings and The Resurrected Christ; and portraits of Florentine men and women, among them Giuliano de’ Medici and Smeralda Bandinelli. The paintings share fine outlines, pale skin tones and soft, clear colour.

The mythological paintings suit living rooms and bedrooms, especially above a sofa or bed; the portraits and Madonnas work well in studies, hallways and dining rooms. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
