The Sword

Vows, verdicts and a blade in the teeth

The Sword: paintings, prints and illustrations in which a sword is central, carried by knights, samurai, saints, heroes and dancers.

Works include Dante Gabriel Rossetti's Joan of Arc, Edward Burne-Jones's St George Kills the Dragon, Aubrey Beardsley's Excalibur illustration for Le Morte Darthur, N. C. Wyeth's Sir Launcelot and Alphonse Mucha's Hamlet poster. Japanese ukiyo-e warriors by Utagawa Kuniyoshi, Tsukioka Yoshitoshi and Kōno Bairei, a Persian Shahnameh miniature of Rustam Slays the White Div, a Korean sword dance by Sin Yun-bok and Kalighat paintings are also included, along with fairy tale illustrations by Kay Nielsen and Edmund Dulac.

The selection draws on legend and story more than history, with heroes, saints and dragon-slayers from European, Japanese, Persian and Indian traditions.

The narrative scenes suit studies, libraries and games rooms; the illustrations also work in an older child's bedroom. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
