Théophile Steinlen Prints

About Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen

Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen (1859–1923) was a Swiss-born artist who made his life and career in Paris. He made his name drawing for Le Chat Noir, the magazine of the famous cabaret of the same name. He went on to draw for many other papers.

Steinlen is best loved for his cats, which he drew again and again, including wordless picture stories such as Cats: Pictures without Words (1898). He was also a fine poster designer, with works like his 1895 poster for the Compagnie Française des Chocolats et des Thès. Alongside the charm, he drew the hard side of city life: street crowds, workers leaving factories and the poor, as in Dans la rue (1895). During the First World War he made prints about soldiers and refugees.

Théophile Steinlen prints: reproductions of Art Nouveau posters, prints and drawings by the Swiss-born Paris artist Théophile-Alexandre Steinlen. The collection includes Chat Noir (1896), Cocorico (1899), Winter: Cat on a Cushion (1909), Two Cats and Nestlé's Swiss Milk, Richest in Cream.

This selection has two strands. The first is Steinlen's cats: cats asleep on a sofa, on a cushion or on a balustrade, and the cover of his book Des chats. The second is his Paris posters for newspapers, sheet music, theatre, exhibitions, motorcycles, milk and cough tablets, with bold lettering and strong outlines. A quiet view of Belmont near Lausanne adds a landscape.

The cat prints suit bedrooms, kitchens and reading corners, and the posters suit hallways, kitchens, bars and offices. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
