Théophile Alexandre Steinlen (1859–1923) was a Swiss-born French artist best known for his 1896 poster for the Chat Noir cabaret in Montmartre — the most famous cat image ever produced and one of the defining icons of the Art Nouveau movement. A prolific draughtsman, illustrator, and printmaker, he documented Parisian working-class life with unflinching social sympathy, producing images of streets, cafés, workers, and animals that combine graphic boldness with genuine compassion.
