Women of the Water

Mermaids, sirens and water nymphs in art: paintings and illustrations of women of the sea, rivers and lakes, including mermaids, sirens, naiads, Undine, the Rhine-maidens, Ophelia, the Lady of the Lake and the birth of Venus. The most represented artist is Arthur Rackham, with Arnold Böcklin, John William Waterhouse, Edward Burne-Jones, Elihu Vedder, Odilon Redon and Edmund Dulac. Most works date from 1851 to 1921: Pre-Raphaelite paintings such as Millais's Ophelia and Waterhouse's A Mermaid, Symbolist paintings, and illustrations for Hans Andersen, Wagner and Shakespeare. The collection also includes Botticelli's The Birth of Venus (1485) and Bouguereau's version of 1879.

The selection follows one figure, the woman of the water, through painting, myth, opera and fairy tale.

The blue and green water palettes suit bathrooms, bedrooms and coastal homes; the larger paintings work above a bed or sofa. All prints are museum-quality reproductions, available unframed or framed with low-glare acrylic glazing, with free shipping and import duties covered.
