Alfred Kubin (1877–1959) was an Austrian symbolist draughtsman, printmaker, and novelist who produced some of the most psychologically disturbing drawings in the history of art — nightmarish visions of death, monsters, chaos, and the absurdity of existence rendered with a scratchy, obsessive pen line that has no equivalent in Western graphic art. A friend of Kandinsky and Paul Klee, and a member of the Blaue Reiter circle, he illustrated dozens of literary classics and produced his own novel The Other Side (1909), a phantasmagoric masterpiece of early 20th-century literature. His drawings remain essential to any collection of Symbolist or Expressionist art.
